I absolutely agree. Don, you have a great mind, a wonderful way with words, a good imagination, and could probably write a really hot sex scene. Come on, have you? If not, take a chance.

 

Honesty time! I've experienced a few very hot sex scenes, but could not write about them. Again, honesty time - I am a high school drop-out. My meager command of the language has been gained from reading, reading, reading, and, oh by the way, reading.

My imagination is basically a dead fish, but my appreciation for other peoples imagination is unexcelled. I am, however, moved by the comments of Mark and Ellen. Moved more than you can imagine - to the point of making a confession (my lack of education) that I have been trying to keep secret for decades.

I don't give a rat's ass about what grade you finished school. What I do care about is well written, classy erotica, and I know you've got it in you.

And . . I don't buy into that hoary old excuse of time. It's your seriously overly developed sense of modesty holding you back. Imagination? Don't worry. Shakespeare never wrote an original plot, he borrowed others. If that really is the problem, and I doubt it, 'borrow' someone else's plot.

Ti adore. Ellen, you really have a way with words. Like I told old what's-his-name, I'll think about it. You and I were lucky, my friend, to have a love of reading instilled in us at a fairly early age. You had your mother and I had myself. Reading has been my life and I'm hesitant about striking out in a different direction, but I will think about it. Love you anyway.

 

I might as well put in my two cents worth in this "Let's convince Don to write" thread.

Honestly, if you don't want to write, don't write. That's up to you. But if it's because you lack education or imagination, there are ways around that.

First, your lack of education means nothing. You obviously know how to put words together that both follow the technical rules and, more importantly, communicate what you want to say. That's really all they teach you in high school. Whatever you lack in education, you've made up for in reading and informal writing (forum posts and the like).

Second, assuming for a moment that you don't have a single creative idea in your head (which I don't believe, by the way), who says you have to come up with the ideas yourself? Ideas are cheap. If you're a person who wants to write but doesn't know what to write about, you're in a perfect position to team up with people with great ideas who have trouble writing them. You might start a thread asking for ideas for your first story. I can almost guarantee you'd get swarmed with ideas. I'd probably contribute five or six myself. Just make sure you mention the themes you like and dislike, or people will be too worried about whether you'll dismiss their ideas out of hand.

Third, if you're considering becoming an author, my advice is to just write a story. Don't worry about whether it will be any good, whether you'll become a famous author, or anything like that. Don't even worry about whether you'll upload it to the internet. Just write. The first story is the biggest hurdle; in fact, I would say that once you have that first story behind you, it's all downhill from there. You'll be shocked at how easy it is to write the second story, and the third, and the fourth. Although I had been writing for a long time, my first work of erotica took several years to finish, mainly because I was getting over my moral hangups. My second was about five times as long, but only took a couple of weeks to write. The difference? Once the first story was finished, I knew I could do it. I had just proven it.

Fourth, you might ask some of the other authors on this site if they would be interested in collaborating with you, to give you some experience. A little hand-holding might help you get over that first hurdle (the first story).

Again, it's up to you whether you want to write or not, but hopefully these points will help you make up your mind.

 

I think the name of this thread is 'Lets embarass donb'. Three of my very favorite authors ganging up on me and embarassing the absolute shit out of me. You guys are really wonderful, but this is a major hurdle for me. Like I said, I will think seriously about it. I will. I promise.

It's been my pleasure and misfortune to have been in sales for a few years. "I'll think about" it is the biggest cop out there is. Whoever says it means "NO" but they're too polite, or scared, to directly address the issue.

Think of a situation. At work, at home, on vacation, even in a movie or on TV.

Think of some people, particularly women. (Your male character will often be based on yourself or how you would like to imagine yourself.) The women may be women you have known well. Maybe even a wife (why have I broken out in a cold sweat and started to shiver?), they may be that pretty girl with the long legs and swirling skirt you saw across the street the other day, or again on TV or in a movie.

Your story will start by being based on these, then the characters will assume a life of their own. Just like your readers you will wonder what they'll do or say next. They'll take over.

Then add some of your own sex experiences. Maybe add to them a bit, but PLEASE don't add 20 inches to your cock.

Then rewrite, rewrite, proofread and proofread (far better than me).

Mix these in with your obvious love of language, your obvious love of story telling, your obvious romantic and sentimentality, and your obvious love of fucking.

I can't wait.

 

Perhaps. And, believe me, I'm not trying to cop-out. I must say that this has been a very moving experience for me. Tell me truly, did you guys get together just to pick on me? If so, it probably has worked.

I can feel you squirming don, so, out of friendship, I won't join the parade of writers asking you to join us in the joys and pitfalls of the printed word.

Let me tell you what I think about your lack of a college education. I had one myself. Well, I had a roommate who was just about the most intelligent 'book-smart' fella you would ever meet in your life. But, when it came to common-sense brains, that guy was as about as dumb as a box of rocks! Now don, when it comes to reading, commenting on, and giving constructive critiques, there 'ain't' a fella on this site who has a fuller box of brains than you do! Mister, you might be reluctant to attempt writing yourself, but I'd betcha a dollar to a dime you could TEACH it!!! Hell, you're teaching here on this thread every damn day!

A comment you made above was a prime example of a teaching mind at work. Why don't idea-stuck new writers follow your suggestion. Pick a story poorly written, get the author's permission, and then re-right it. You certainly couldn't mess it up. I once thought about trying this once, just as an exercise in vanity, but I never got around to it.

Honestly, I am not really embarassed. My lack of education is only lacking in the 'formal' area, anyway and I'm not really ashamed of my brain. As far as using it to write for other peoples enjoyment, I just don't know if I have it in me. One thing that has been accomplished is to get me thinking about it. If I ever do, you four will be the first to know.
