The Balfour declaration was a major cock up, that we are still paying the price for 100 years later.

You guys will be flipping back to the Old Testament, at the rate you're going!

    LOL

Let's cut to the chase: Cane slew Abel.

There. Now, can we return to the 21st Century?

I asked a serious question: why can't the Palestinians live peaceably among the Jews and Christians, as Arab-Israeli citizens?

I got a few wise assed retorts, but no real answer.

I guess the "anti-Zionists" around here are incapable of dealing with the fact that the Palestinians are their own worst enemies.

Because peaceful coexistence would be the best for everyone, including the Palestinians. And let's face it: they would have to coexist peacefully with the Jews even if they were to get their state. (Unless they really will not stop at anything less than finishing the job that Adolf Hitler started.) So, since they have to live with the Jews one way or another, why don't they just bury the hatchet?

Answer: they can't. Because they're animals.

    Reread what you posted.....
You were not talking about what happened in 1920

It was the Zionist that initiated the violence in 1946.

Some 1,500 Jews and Arabs demonstrated on Saturday evening in Jerusalem under the motto “we will not surrender to despair.”

The demonstrators marched from Gan Hasus ("Horse Park") in the center of the city to Kikar Hahatulot (“Cat Square”). A small group of right-wing protesters demonstrated at the endpoint of the march, with police separating the two sides.

The main demonstration was organized by a new joint Jewish-Arab group called “Omdim Beyachad” (“Standing Together”), which was formed in response to the current wave of violence. Members of the group have called for an immediate stop to the violence and the end of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.

My point was that it was the Arabs who initiated the use of violence in 1920. If they had allowed the Jews to move in, as we Yanks did when lots of Jews moved here during the turn of the last century, there would have been no violence. The Jews did not take land from the Arabs. They bought land from the Turkish landlords. Then they evicted the Arabs who lived there and farmed the land more efficiently than the Arab peasants had.

Now as far as the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, I am not going to defend that. Indeed, it may have been counter productive. Nevertheless, the British were trying to keep survivors of the Holocaust from moving to Palestine. That was wrong too. I am glad that Jews resisted the British, and that the Jewish immigration continued.

Again, if the Arabs had accepted the UN Partition of 1947 there would have been no violence. The Arabs attacked the Jews. Fortunately, they lost.

The Balfour Declaration was a very positive development that advanced the cause of Zionism. :D

If it was not for Israel the Arabs would need to invent another alibi for their inability to create viable societies, either in Arab countries, or in Arab neighborhoods in Europe. The only reason the Arabs have any significance at all is because some of them have oil under their sand.

Again, reread what you originally posted.

You were talking of the period around 1947.......you never mentioned 1920.

The initiators of the violence of the 1947 period was "Irgun" the Zionist terror group with the bombing of The King David Hotel in 1946,........and not the Arabs as you posted.

    This is what I wrote:

I was not talking of the period around 1947. I was talking of the initial migration of Zionist Jews to their homeland. The Jews did not move in and start killing Arabs. The Arabs started killing them. Fortunately, the Jews fought back and won.

    I don't know about this.

When I say they're animals, I mean they're animals NOW.

    Wasn't always so.

In the time of Saladin they were experiencing a golden age. They invented our modern conception of zero, and they invented algebra, including the polynomial and quadratic forms. The word Algebra comes from the name of an Islamic thinker.

So they were not always animals. And they once did bring value to civilization.

It is not occupied land. It is conquered land.

The "occupation" is not going to end, because the Palestinians cannot be trusted.

Jerusalem will not be partitioned, for the same reason.

The Jews are not going to vacate the West Bank. The Palestinians have to live with them.

Peace is possible, but in order to achieve it the Palestinians have to be prepared to recognize the existence of Israel and reconcile themselves to living peaceably among the Jews.

    For how long?

At least a century. I can't imagine just one century would be enough.

Actually, what we call "Arabic numbers" were invented in India. You are right about algebra. My guess is that a lot of high school kids wish that they never invented algebra.

Not numbers, generally. Yes, the decimal system is Indian. But zero came with algebra; it is a consequence of rational polynomials (i.e. linear and/or quadratics in both the numerator and the denominator).

The Indians had an informal sense of zero, and they are not unique in this regard. Even the Mayans of South America had a zero of sorts, which they counted on a system of strings and beads similar in some respects to an abacus.

For that matter, the ancient Chinese (inventors of the Abacus) used a kind of zero as a placeholder.

However Zero itself-- as a discrete quantity unto itself-- was formalized with Islam's development of general polynomial equations. Islam, showed us the boundaries and scope of Zero (for instance that any real number divided by Zero is undefined).

    postscript:

However DL I agree with the thrust of your objection: yes, Islam owes the civility of its golden age entirely to the Persian Empire (which today is India).

Europe at the time was a pathetic backwater, which explains the ease with which Islam marched straight into Europe via Spain, all the way into France.

And thus precipitated the Crusades. (Which Europe is unfairly blamed for.)

In a sense Islam did the Holy Roman Empire a huge favor: they woke Europe up and showed the Europeans that one ignores the world at one's peril.

I suppose we will have to learn that lesson all over again....

Carthage was acclaimed by the ancient Greeks as the ideal society.
It was distroyed by the barbarian Roman Empire, and became a disaster under the later Christians.

I was raised Mormon and for most of my early teenage years I spent looking for the seeing stones, Urim and Thummin that were kept in the breastplate of Aaron the brother of Moses and I couldn't find them so I didn't want to play the Mormonism thingy anymore. I really wanted those stones for my rock collection, I wanted them badly. Some how tho I think they had something to do with the Jews and the Palestinians this is why I mention the stones, because they are all inter-related with every thing you all are discussing here. In some form or another. I think.
