If this theater company thought their patrons wouldn't give a damn, they were wrong.

A historic Memphis, Tennessee, theater, which has shown "Gone With the Wind" screenings for 34 years, has decided to remove the classic film from its schedule due to its racially "insensitive" content.

The move comes after violence erupted at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month. The president of the Orpheum Theatre said the decision to remove the 1939 film was not directly related to the recent headlines.

Disney pulled Song of the South in 1986 because of controversy about how slavery was depicted and Disney's "idealizing" slavery.

A butt hurt black attorney is offended by the Mississippi State flag, so he filed a lawsuit, which was dismissed. He has now appealed to SCOTUS which appears to be looking into the case.

I was wondering if Gone With The Wind was going to come up.

My grandma grew up with an actress named Isabel Jewell that is actually in Gone With The Wind and I even met and worked for her a few days myself. So we were all very impressed with Gone With The Wind and watched it often.

And then many years later I told my kids about that and we rented Gone With The Wind so they could see it and Isabel. They were in high school by then and it didn't take long before they were looking at me and going Dad WTF??? And especially my oldest daughter finally just said Dad let's turn this racist piece of shit off. And I had never really seen all the terrible racist stereotypes portrayed in it before. But it sure was different seeing it through their eyes

And I actually just finished reading another story about a school in San Antonio where the school board has voted to drop the name Robert E Lee. And it was just a couple years ago the same school board voted unanimously to keep it. But it is actually the students pushing for the change and the events in Charlottesville helped convince the board it was time for a change.

Los Angeles has officially removed Columbus Day as a State holiday. They will instead be celebrating Indigenous People Day.

Thankfully, the times they are a changin and it seems a lot of the current generation are having trouble even understanding what racism is, or how anyone could be racist.

The thing is, if we don't pay attention to our history we're probably going to repeat it.

And tearing down monuments, banning old movies and not teaching accurate history doesn't get rid of racism, in fact it allows it to flourish.

I don't think anyone is advocating teaching inaccurate history. And discontinuing a movie is a lot different then banning it.

I saw "Gone With the Wind" twice. It is not one of my favorites, but it is well done. Unlike some movies made at the time it did not present the Negroes as comical or evil, but as human beings. I did not feel that it took the side of the Confederacy. It did not glamorize the Civil War, but portrayed the war in its horror and tragedy.

From 1936 to 1938 The Federal Writers' Project hired writers to interview elderly Negroes about their experience as slaves. Some of the experiences were horrible, as one can imagine. Some of the Negroes remembered their white owners fondly. One said that the white woman who owned her when both were girls was her best friend through out her life.

One of the Negroes said that after the Civil War his former master went around looking for his former slaves. When he found one he asked the ex slave to come back to the plantation, and that some were so glad to get back they cried.

    https://www.loc.gov/collections/sla...s-project-1936-to-1938/about-this-collection/

I do not believe that a movie or a novel needs to portray all slave owners, and indeed all antebellum Southern whites, as evil in order to avoid being dismissed as "racist," or even "racially insensitive."

That said, I want the Confederate statues to come down, but it is not something I feel strongly about. Two of my ancestors fought in the Union Army. None of my ancestors had anything to do with the Confederacy. None owned slaves, or participated in any way with the slave trade.

Shootersa prides himself in being so totally detached from reality he is actually proud of the fantasy world he has created. The current generation lives racism every single day. They are surrounded by it. They have countless examples of it everywhere they look. The difference is they do not think it is OK. The difference is they think we should actually end racism instead of simply ignoring it or worse reveling in it.

The current generation knows full well racism did not end with the passage of the Civil Rights Act or the election of Barack Obama. Unlike shootersa the new generation does not pretend racism and prejudice and bigotry do not exist and everything is hunky doory except for all those evil liberals.

Actually they are. Just check out some of the textbooks they adopted in Texas. Check out the revision of the Civil War that wasn't about slavery at all. It was all about State's Rights doncha know.

PS And another way to spot a true racist is when they try to claim there were no comical and/or patronizing and/or violent black stereotypes in Gone With The Wind when those are actually the only black characters in that movie.

Why yes, and a movie created over 75 years ago, in a completely different era, with black stereotypes should be banned, cause, you know, all those minds of the current generation will think AH! So that's what them darkies are (were) like. We need to adopt those attitudes!

Next we'll be banning Mark Twain, cause that cracker did nothing but stereo type.

You know we're in trouble when arrogant people start trying to ban and censor our history.

Racism has existed for thousands of years just as slavery has and continues to exist. People can try to change history and make themselves feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but they will never eradicate either.

Its actually bullshit to try and claim anyone is trying to change history other than conservatives who are actually trying to re-write history books to whitewash things like slavery and the civil war and a few things like that.

Taking confederate monuments and the confederate flags down on public property and changing names of streets and schools doesn't change history one bit. No one is saying they weren't traitors to the United States of America and white supremacists. They were. At most all anyone is saying is maybe those things really aren't worth honoring in this day and age.

So conservatives are rewriting history books, and trying to preserve southern heritage? Why would conservatives try to erase slavery, yet fight to preserve statues of Confederates?

Now stop. You'll confuse Stumbler with facts and logic, and that will trigger him.

Accept it. That you question why we're suddenly focused on Confederate memorials and statues and that damn flag means you are a racist. You need to be demonized, attacked, and destroyed!!!

How Texas is whitewashing Civil War history

Texas officials: Schools should teach that slavery was ‘side issue’ to Civil War

Rewriting history and the pursuit of ignorance

Arizona’s ban on Mexican American studies was racist, U.S. court rules

Not satisfied with U.S. history, some conservatives are rewriting it
