The civil war (I assume you didn’t mean car) was never about slavery although Lincoln used it politically shamelessly to make it appear so while doing nothing about slavery that continued to exist in the northern states of Kentucky and Delaware.

The South was fighting for the political cause of state’s rights as were clearly enumerated by the founders and American tradition at that time.

And Confederates also died in huge numbers defending the principle that the original intent of the constitution had been betrayed.

"States rights" is the demand of states where most of the inhabitants desire a policy that most people in the United States oppose. Nevertheless, conservatives oppose states rights on the issue of marijuana. Many states favor legalizing marijuana, but conservatives want prohibition of marijuana to be enforced at the national level.

 

In the years leading up to the American Civil War abolition was not a popular cause in the North. Abolitionists were often persecuted. Nevertheless, most Northerners wanted slavery to be kept out of their states, and kept out of the territories. This was largely because they wanted blacks to be kept out of those areas.

In the 1860 presidential campaign Abraham Lincoln claimed that he did not intend to free the slaves in the South, but that he opposed what he called "a second Dred Scott Decision." This would be a decision by the United States Constitution finding laws against slavery in the North to be unconstitutional. Because they wanted to keep blacks out of their states, most Northerners opposed abolition in the southern states. If slaves were freed in the South many would move north.

By the time the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln in January 1, 1863 most Northerners hated hated the Southern whites sufficiently that they wanted to punish them by freeing their slaves. Also, they wanted blacks to enlist in the Union Army. About 250,000 did.

 

All 34 States had indentured servants at that times, just a few had 'slaves'.

The first Slave owner in the U.S., was a Black Man and the Courts deemed it possible...seems no one wants to talk about that.
