The bible with it's creation story of woman being created from the rib of man also says the sun revolves around the earth and if you work on the Sabbath you are to be stoned to death in the town square.

You're correct, that's why except the Ten Commandments, the Bible is pretty much just a bunch of stories, and things to live by, not to be taken as fact or as the end all be all of Christian teaching. Well the Old Testament at least, that's just stories passed down hundreds of thousands of years, finally written down on scrolls, then translated, etc.

Catholic teachings tell us that the writers of the New Testament were guided by the Holy Spirit and God, not the many many people who told the stories in the Old Testament, all that is just hearsay.

 

And the penalty for violating the Ten Commandments is death. If you have kids will you kill him or her for dishonoring you? Or working on the sabbath? Or coveting his neighbors ass?

Another rarely talked about bit of trivia is the Ten Commandments only apply to Jews.

Well yea, they only strictly apply to Jews, but it is a Catholic belief that the Ten Commandments really were passed down by God, and so therefore we should follow them too

And yea, the ancient Middle East was even crazier back then than it is now. The craziest thing though, is my teacher from HS(who actually died this year), went to Israel one year and he was there on the Sabbath one time, when a bunch of Muslim kids from a non Jewish neighborhood were joyriding through the Jewish neighborhood during Sabbath(and driving a car is considered work), and they ended up getting stoned, seriously, just had huge ass rocks hurled at their car. Can't remember if they died or not, but our teacher had pics and everything

 

Were/are they crazy or just devout? They were simply following the laws as were passed down to them by God. What's the point of laws if there is no punishment? The level of cherry-picking that has to go on for a person of any ancient religion these days is astounding and it's done with no sense of guilt. For instance, you as a catholic will take the Ten Commandments and treat them as sacred but when it's time to institute the punishment aspect of the equation, you call that crazy.

And I'm not nitpicking, I'm pointing out why the faith you have as a catholic and in their teachings is illogical. Every time they don't kill a commandment breaker, they are cherry picking their faith. It is not just the ravings of a small number of crazies, it is every religion. The nuts are just more devout than you are. They are following 'the word of God' and you (metaphorically speaking) with your lack of adherence, are not.

That's the big Catch-22 with religion and religious people. You can say you respect the beliefs of others but how can you really respect someone who you think is eternally damned. If the opposing religion were in power and you found yourself on the wrong side and suddenly oppressed and persecuted, I'm betting you wouldn't respect those other beliefs very much.

I have it on good authority that there is no hell, and heaven is just another name for where we all go when we die and that religion has nothing to do with it. Of course they could be wrong too.
