Samuel Houston inaugurated as first president of Texas in 1836
October 22, 1836: On this day, Samuel Houston was inaugurated as the Republic of Texas' first President. The same year, the city of Houston was founded and named after him in his honor.

Before Houston called Texas home, he served in the War of 1812 and was the governor of Tennessee. He also spent a number of years living with the Cherokee Indians and was granted Cherokee citizenship by the tribe.

 

October 22nd, 1962 was when President Kennedy informed the American public of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the impending US naval blockade. 13 very touchy days...

1958 The Springhill Mine Bump - underground earthquake traps 174 miners in No. 2 colliery at Springhill, Nova Scotia, deepest coal mine in North America. By 1st November rescuers had dug out 100 victims, with death toll at 74.

 

Also from WWII, On October 23, 1944 - but in the Pacific theater, Admiral 'Bull' Halsey began the decisive three day Battle of the Leyte Gulf. Routed the bastards in the largest sea/air battle of the war - and possibly in history (it's in some ways disputed logistically). It was also the last time battleships fought each other.

 

Hungarian Republic Day is celebrated every year on October 23. This day is honored in remembrance of two great events in Hungary’s history. First, when the people of Hungary stood up against the Soviet Union, and second, the creation of Hungary in 1989. The Hungarian Revolution was an impulsive revolt that spread throughout the whole of Hungary. The nation revolted against the local government and the policies that were imposed on it by the Soviets. The revolution lasted from October 23 till November 10, 1956. Despite the revolution’s failure, it played a great role in the fall of the Soviet Union many years later.

A suicide bomber drives a truck packed with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 U.S. military personnel. That same morning, 58 French soldiers were killed in their barracks two miles away in a separate suicide terrorist attack. The U.S. Marines were part of a multinational force sent to Lebanon in August 1982 to oversee the Palestinian withdrawal from Lebanon. From its inception, the mission was plagued with problems–and a mounting body count.

I joined the Navy September 18th, 1983. On my first night they threatened to send us to Beirut, to scare us. The first ship I served on, was stationed off the coast of Lebanon during this conflict.

Minnesota Vikings' Jim Marshall runs wrong way with recovered fumble
On October 25, 1964, after recovering a fumble against the 49ers in San Francisco, Minnesota Vikings star defensive end Jim Marshall runs 66 yards the wrong way into his own end zone. The four-year veteran believes he has scored a touchdown, so he throws the ball out of bounds in celebration, resulting in a safety for San Franscisco and putting an exclamation point on one of the worst gaffes in NFL history. Despite Marshall's error, the Vikings win, 27-22.

Charge of the Light Brigade. October 25th, 1854
In an event alternately described as one of the most heroic or disastrous episodes in British military history, Lord James Cardigan leads a charge of the Light Brigade cavalry against well-defended Russian artillery during the Crimean War. The British were winning the Battle of Balaclava when Cardigan received his order to attack the Russians. His cavalry gallantly charged down the valley and were decimated by the heavy Russian guns, suffering 40 percent casualties. It was later revealed that the order was the result of confusion and was not given intentionally. Lord Cardigan, who survived the battle, was hailed as a national hero in Britain.

United States invades Grenada. October 25th, 1983
President Ronald Reagan, citing the threat posed to American nationals on the Caribbean nation of Grenada by that nation’s Marxist regime, orders U.S. forces to invade and secure their safety. There were approximately 1,000 Americans in Grenada at the time, many of them students at the island’s medical school. In little more than a week, Grenada’s government was overthrown.
