impossible. porn is nothing but images of sex or nudity. a world without sex is impossible hence a world without porn is impossible. our generation tends to think of porn only in terms of video, online porn etc. but like I said porn is just images of sex and nudity. as long as people have been screwing each other somebody has been painting it, drawing it, writing about it etc etc etc

No porn would first of all mean that folks didn't have the sex-drive they have right now. Meaning that there's a strong possibility we'd have far less sex, meaning that there's the odd chance we, as a species, wouldn't have survived long enough for you to be able to raise the question...

That's a pretty narrow minded view, though. There are whole series of documented, sexually oriented rituals, dating back millennia, which largely serve the same purpose as video porn does in our own society. Before home video there were theaters, as well. And before that, around the WWI time frame especially, there were these picture flipper mechanisms that had porn available...

Obviously, if you say that "as we know it" means that the medium must include the web then that makes porn "new", but that's a really simplistic viewpoint. Stunningly so, actually.

You all make very good remarks to this question especialy Incubus that statement really caught my eye. Still have to ask though, If porn was never invented and people only had sex for the sake of humanity just to reproduce and didn't get any enjoyment out of it, it would be one fucked up world would it not?

 

You been living under a very big rock, or you're very young... Porn is as old as there's been modern civilizations. And that's at least a couple of millennia.

Recent history has Swedish dude Lasse Halstrom as example, who started making 8 and 16mm movies in the early sixties, which where classified as porn (because of, well, being pornographic for depicting copulating people).

Betty Page -considered the first fetish queen- was a regular pin-up who made some spicey movies from the fifties on... etc. There's umpteen examples about porn being around for ages (as Kin Nothing already pointed out).

Of course, over time, with the adapting/shifting of morals, some things aren't considered to be porn any longer, or, in some cases, it's the other way round...

As you can see from the pics in the article, porn has been around for some time.

 

What cave you been living in? My dad had porn videos back in '74 or so, on Beta (which I'm guessing you've probably never even heard of). Porn has been around in magazines and on 8mm and Super 8 film even longer than that, and in paintings, sculpture, photography, or in some form or another probably since the first time man ever got a woody. And the internet came along when, in the 80's? Get a clue.

 

In the 1970s and 80s there was a string of porn theaters in Los Angeles called the Pussycat Theaters, which showed what are now referred to as "classic porn" films. Similar venues existed in San Francisco, and I'm sure they did in other other major cities. In the 1980s, long before the internet, people rented VCRs so that they could watch those same porn films in their homes. Before all of that, they bought magazines and what some people refer to as "fuck books".

I'd bet throughout human history, as soon as some means of communication came along, some form of porn followed right behind. They were probably moving a forefinger in and out through a circle formed by the thumb and forefinger on the other hand as soon as sign language came along, or talking about that they would do to that hot babe in the leopard skin miniskirt as soon as they developed speech. Cave paintings, carvings, clay sculpture, sure as hell as soon as each was developed, some guy was there figuring out how to use them for porn. And shortly after that, some other guy figured out how to make a buck off it. Sex and profit, mankind's two overwhelming drives.
