Mono steel blades, eh? So the hamon is just etched on, or has it been differentially heat treated?

And even with modern forging techniques the folded method is still the most effective for a variety of reasons: the steel the swords are historically and culturally made with requires a lot of working to remove impurities; the differential heat treatment and the use of a variety of grades of steel throughout the construction requires the folded method, and it's the only method that allows for the necessary graduations in hardness and flexibility throughout the blade.

I agree that folded blades are superior and yes I think the hamon has probably been etched on but I can't be sure as I'm not an expert. The next sword I buy will be a clay tempered one but I won't buy it this year because collecting swords is quite an expensive hobby.

Yeah, considering swords made in the traditional manner can cost upwards of ten thousand dollars! Not many people that do that anymore... buying replicas seems to be a slightly hollow alternative, though.

They look like cheap replicas to me the kind you set on a mantel for show. True swords cost a lot of money.

 

He's happily told us they are mono steel. There's no need to be rude about it...

 

I have a commissioned katana from ZhiSword the beauty cut through a roll of waterlogged news papers about 7 inches thick no problem.

 

They cost £100 each and they are real (full tang, razor sharp) swords because only genuine traditionally hand forged swords are legal to buy in the UK. The cheap display replicas that your thinking about are usually made of stainless steel with a rat tail tang and would brake if you actually used them for anything.

These ones are not of the very highest quality (As I've already said) but would still be more then capable of light cutting exercises.
