All my internet traffic goes through a VPN anyway so my ISP's are covered, and I run all my internet browsing using a linux VM on virtuabox so the hardware ID stuff is not that of my actual machine. I've considered using Whonix, but that taking it too far even for me. Even if all this stuff makes me a potential target, I'm not doing anything illegal, so I have little to fear. It's just out of principle to maintain privacy. I wouldn't be afraid if the government wanted to install a cctv in my car or in my home, I have nothing to hide, I just don't want one. I'm no where near invisible either, I still have a facebook and gmail account, and their efforts collecting data make the NSA look rather tame in comparison, even with all the privacy settings set to my liking.

 

It's actually not very interesting. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but I also found it to be shockingly slow (I'm pretty sure that's a part of the problem inherent in the onion design though).

If you're a Jimmy Saville-like pervert, you don't have a local dealer or you want some black market weapons it may be of use to you (although Anonymous recently published the details of all the users of a child porn site on there, when the owners of the server didn't listen to them and shut it down themselves).

tor is slow. You have to bounce your way through a lot of proxy servers, and your speed is limited by the slowest link in the chain. It's no good for normal web browsing. Additionally for normal web browsing you probably want to use certain plugins, which will prevent you from being truly anonymous and defeats the object of using tor.

if you intend to remain truly anonymous you will need to set up a VPN and run from a virtual drive that is encrypted
i run under ubuntu most times from a thumb drive that can be easily deleted then run that through either the onion or a soft like KPROXY and set up your VPN and not even the feds can track you
the feds do not normally attempt do decrypt anything because it takes too many resources and too much time plus it is illegal for them to do
now some IRCs do an automatic decryption as a routine designed to run within the sites base algorithm which was pioneered by google
