Very old non-story.

I've been saying since October that if "Russians" were involved in hacking, it was likely just bored kids in Moscow dorms. But I'm not claiming to be a genius. EVERYONE who knows anything about the hacker community was saying that.

Do the NSA and CIA have "evidence" that some of the hacking originated in Russia or used Russia-originated software? Maybe. But that should come as no surprise. Most hacking software either comes from eastern Europe and Russia or is traded on servers that are hosted there. So in fact this "evidence," even if it exists, doesn't mean anything.

And if "Russians" took part in hacking, that does not mean the government had anything to do with it. All it means is that Russian kids are bored and treat hacking like a game.

So even if you buy the unsubstantiated claim that there's "evidence" of Russian involvement, it means nothing whatsoever.

Trump's Russian nightmare is growing exponentially.

Special counsel investigation includes Manafort, may expand to Sessions: report

Robert Mueller, the newly appointed special counsel in the investigation into Russian election interference, has assumed a separate criminal investigation of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and may soon expand the investigation to include Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Rosenstein announced the appointment of Mueller last month. Mueller is a former prosecutor who served 12 years at the helm of the FBI and is respected on both sides of the aisle.

The investigation has been underway at the FBI for months and appears to be focused heavily on several figures who were prominent in the Trump campaign, including former National Security adviser Michael Flynn and Manafort.

The Justice Department's own investigation of Manafort and his past business dealings with the Ukraine began ahead of the 2016 election. The FBI only announced its investigation of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in March.

Rosenstein, in a separate interview with AP Friday, acknowledged that Mueller could expand the investigation to include himself and Sessions, adding that if that were to happen he would recuse himself from any oversight of the special counsel.

“I’ve talked with Director Mueller about this,” Rosenstein told AP. “He’s going to make the appropriate decisions, and if anything that I did winds up being relevant to his investigation then, as Director Mueller and I discussed, if there’s a need from me to recuse I will.”

Rosenstein was under pressure to appoint a special prosecutor last month following the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. Rosenstein appointed Mueller shortly after the firing, and Mueller has since taken over the investigation.

One thing that is just plain obvious is the PR hacks and their many many socks, the plastic bubble reactionaries, and the Trump supporters are in such a blind state of denial they can't even see how bad this is getting or pretend not to. But here's a hint. The last line of defence Trump has is the attorney general and deputy attorney general he appointed. But now the investigation is expanding to the point it might also include both of them. And since AG Sessions has already recused himself any more revelations about him will either force his resignation or impeachment. And Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein may have to reuse himself. And if that happens Trump has no one on the inside to protect him.

Mueller broadens Trump investigation to include Manafort and possibly Sessions

The special counsel investigating possible ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia's government has taken over a separate criminal probe involving former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and may expand his inquiry to investigate the roles of the attorney general and deputy attorney general in the firing of FBI Director James Comey, The Associated Press has learned.

The Justice Department's criminal investigation into Manafort, who was forced to resign as Trump campaign chairman in August amid questions over his business dealings years ago in Ukraine, predated the 2016 election and the counterintelligence probe that in July began investigating possible collusion between Moscow and associates of Trump.

The move to consolidate the matters, involving allegations of kleptocracy of Ukrainian government funds, indicates that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is assuming a broad mandate in his new role running the sensational investigation. The expansiveness of Mueller's investigation was described to the AP. No one familiar with the matter has been willing to discuss the scope of his investigation on the record because it is just getting underway and because revealing details could complicate its progress.

In an interview separately Friday with the AP, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein acknowledged that Mueller could expand his inquiry to include Attorney General Jeff Sessions' and Rosenstein's own roles in the decision to fire Comey, who was investigating the Trump campaign. Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller as special counsel to take over the investigation, wrote the memorandum intended to justify Trump's decision to fire Comey. Sessions met with Trump and Rosenstein to discuss Trump's decision to fire him despite Sessions' pledge not to become involved in the Russia case.

The AP asked Rosenstein specifically whether Mueller's investigation could expand to include examining Sessions' role.

"The order is pretty clear," Rosenstein responded. "It gives him authority for the investigation and anything arising out of that investigation, and so Director Mueller will be responsible in the first instance for determining what he believes falls into that mandate."

Rosenstein told the AP that if he were to become a subject of Mueller's investigation, he would recuse himself from any oversight of Mueller. Under Justice Department rules, Mueller is required to seek permission from Rosenstein to investigate additional matters other than ones already specified in the paperwork formally appointing Mueller.

"I've talked with Director Mueller about this," Rosenstein said. "He's going to make the appropriate decisions, and if anything that I did winds up being relevant to his investigation then, as Director Mueller and I discussed, if there's a need from me to recuse I will."

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the scope of the investigation.

Mueller, who spent 12 years as FBI director and served under Republican and Democratic presidents, was appointed as special counsel following the May 9 firing of Comey, who is expected to testify for the first time next week before the Senate.

Mueller's assignment, detailed in a one-page order signed by Rosenstein, covers the federal investigation into possible links or coordination between Russia and associates of the Trump campaign but also "any matters that arose or may arise directly" from the probe. It would also extend to any allegations of perjury, witness intimidation or obstruction of justice uncovered during the course of the investigation.

As Mueller's investigation begins, members of Congress are intensely interested in its direction and scope.

Last month, House Democrats called for congressional investigations into whether Sessions violated his pledge to recuse himself from matters related to investigations into Trump associates. They also asked the Justice Department to investigate Sessions' role in Comey's firing and to lay out how that investigation would proceed.

A Democratic aide said Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., asked Rosenstein about the matter during a briefing before House members. Rosenstein said he would get back to Cummings, but he has yet to respond, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private interactions.

Will Trump return Russian properties seized by Obama?

The Trump administration has come under criticism from Democrats for considering to return to Russia two diplomatic compounds, one near New York City and the other on Maryland's eastern shore. Russian officials staying there were ousted by former President Barack Obama as a form of punishment for Moscow's interference in the 2016 presidential election, reports said.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-California) criticized President Donald Trump in a statement, for reportedly considering the return of the two diplomatic properties seized from Russia in December. She said: "I am stunned by the audacity of this president that he would dare reverse any form of the punishments imposed on Russia for election meddling when he and members of his team are under scrutiny for coordinating with Russian operatives to undermine our democracy."

"Those compounds enjoyed diplomatic immunity, which meant that U.S. law enforcement could not enter and activities that took place there could escape U.S. prosecution,” Waters added. “If the reports are true and Donald Trump intends to reverse Obama era punishments for Russia’s meddling in the election as well as Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, then you can be sure that I will fight tooth and nail to stop him.”

Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-Rhode Island) also released a statement saying that returning the Russian compounds rewards "Russia's bad behavior."

Not much is known about the two properties that Trump is considering returning to Russia.

The Maryland compound is located two miles away from the eastern shore of Centreville in Queen Anne's County, about 60 miles outside Washington, D.C. The Russian Federation, then U.S.S.R., reportedly purchased this 45-acre vacation estate to be used by officials in 1972. It was valued at $3 million in 1992.

The compound was described to have a tall chain-link fence surrounding it and there were video cameras to monitor the premises. At the time, a local newspaper reported "fears of nuclear submarines surfacing in the Chester River to pick up American secrets and defectors," but, the frequency of dinner parties, caviar and vodka eventually won the locals over.

At the time when the property was purchased, neighbors were not intimidated by the Russian visitors, according to a report.

"As far as neighbors are concerned, you couldn't ask for better," Joe Handley, a former estate manager for Raskob, told the Washington Post in 1979. "They don't bother anybody."

Very little is known about the other property in Long Island's Nassau County. It is spread over 14 acres and was purchased by the Soviet government in 1954. The building in Upper Brookville village is reportedly known as the Norwich House on Mill River Road among the locals.

Recently, the property was assessed at a value of $9.4 million, according to county property records. Due to its status as a foreign government's embassy, it was partially exempted from taxes, according to the records.

Appearing on “AM Joy,” Newsweek reporter Kurt Eichenwald explained that the White House will be unable to explain away President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jated Kushner’s secret overtures to the Russians, saying, “there is no innocent explanation for it.”

Speaking with host Joy Reid, Eichenwald dismissed the notion that Kushner was involved in diplomatic negotiations when speaking with Russian bankers.

“The problem is there is no innocent explanation — every answer they have is bad,” Eichenwald began. “You’ve got a situation and what you’re left with is Jared Kushner a fool or is he corrupt? Let’s assume it was a business meeting — you want to borrow money. Do you know of many bankers who come flying from another country to you to talk to you about giving you money? That is not making any sense, that is number one.”

“Number two, Jared Kushner knew what his role was,” Eichenwald continued. “Jared Kushner knew his father-in-law was about to be the president of the United States, and he feels like it’s appropriate to be going to banks connected to the Kremlin and say, ‘Hey, I want some money.’ You have a meeting between Jared Kushner and bank in terms of dealing with national security issues supposedly, or getting into issues of diplomacy? What is Jared Kushner doing getting involved in that to begin with? Secondly, why are they doing this at a time when Donald Trump is not the president of the United States?”

“Nothing should have been going on without it being done in coordination with the State Department,” he added. “That is how these things are handled. You don’t start with coming administration starting to run secret meetings undermining national security and foreign policy of the United States. It just doesn’t work that way.”

Releasing damaging emails from Podesta and the DNC revealing the corruption of Hillary Clinton, may or may not have been done by the Russians. But that is not hacking the election. That is simply just informing the electorate before they vote.
The election was not hacked.
If Trump had knowingly colluded with the Russians, evidence would have been presented months ago.

Secondly, not sure why everyone hates the fact that the leader of the free world and the leader of Russia appear to not hate each other. If Trump and Putin get along, that is literally the best news for all of humanity. Russia is the only country on the planet that could destroy the US and the world in an afternoon. Currently Russian forces and the US Air force are taking part in a three way conflict in Syria. The slightest miscalculation from either side could result in tensions that put us back into a cold war scenario. I'd rather us be in a situation whereby the Russian Premier and the President of the USA can call one another up and resolve the tension.

I don't know who leaked the Podesta and DNC emails, but whoever it was, we owe them a huge thanks.

That was the only reliable information the US populace received through the entire span of the campaign season.

And it was immensely helpful to the nation.

First, it knocked the communist Bernie Sanders out of the primaries. So we dodged a bullet there.

And it undoubtedly contributed to the defeat of Hillary Clinton, which also was immensely fortunate. I'm not saying the releases were the ONLY cause... the media never properly covered them, so most Americans really had no clue as to what the releases actually said-- and certainly Hillary aided her own defeat by declaring nearly half the population to be "deplorable and irredeemable"-- but the Wiki releases certainly helped.

The damning thing is that our own government should have produced this information, and our own mainstream media should have covered it legitimately.

Nunes-led House Intelligence Committee asked for ‘unmaskings’ of Americans

The Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee asked U.S. spy agencies late last year to reveal the names of U.S. individuals or organizations contained in classified intelligence on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, engaging in the same practice that President Trump has accused the Obama administration of abusing, current and former officials said.

The chairman of the committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), has since cast the practice of “unmasking” of U.S. individuals and organizations mentioned in classified reports as an abuse of surveillance powers by the outgoing Obama administration.

Trump has argued that investigators should focus their attention on former officials leaking names from intelligence reports, rather than whether the Kremlin coordinated its activities with the Trump campaign, an allegation he has denied. “The big story is the ‘unmasking and surveillance’ of people that took place during the Obama administration,” Trump tweeted Thursday.

According to a tally by U.S. spy agencies, the House Intelligence Committee requested five to six unmaskings of U.S. organizations or individuals related to Trump or Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton between June 2016 and January 2017. Officials familiar with the matter said that the committee’s requests focused on the identities of U.S. organizations that had been hacked by the Russians in 2016. Officials declined to say how many of the requests came from Democrats vs. Republicans.

The chairman of the committee wields enormous control over the actions of its members and requests for more information from intelligence agencies. Officials said that committee rules require the chairman to sign off on the requests, even ones that are not his own.

A spokesman for Republicans on Nunes’s committee declined to comment on whether the panel made any requests for unmasking.

He added, “It is standard operating procedure for the House Intelligence Committee to forward all committee members’ questions from both parties to the appropriate agencies, whether or not they are answered. I refer you to committee Democrats for further questions on this subject.”

Every day, U.S. intelligence agencies sweep up vast quantities of foreign communications. Sometimes, they pick up communications involving U.S. individuals or organizations. In reports based on those communications, intelligence agencies “mask” the identities of the Americans, part of an effort to protect their privacy.

Senior government officials, however, can ask spy agencies to reveal the names of Americans or U.S. organizations in the reports if they believe that doing so will help them better understand the underlying intelligence. They must have a legitimate need to know, and National Security Agency unmaskings are reviewed by the Justice Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, known as the ODNI.

Some officials said that House Intelligence Committee members may not have realized spy agencies would count their requests as unmaskings. These officials said lawmakers submitted questions that intelligence officers could answer only by revealing the identities of U.S. individuals.

Nunes served subpoenas this week to the CIA, the NSA and the FBI asking for information about unmaskings requested by three former officials: national security adviser Susan E. Rice, CIA director John Brennan and U.N. ambassador Samantha Power.

On Thursday, Nunes tweeted, “Seeing a lot of fake news from media elites and others who have no interest in violations of Americans’ civil liberties via unmaskings.”

Democrats on the panel say they believe the latest direction of Nunes’s investigation is designed to deflect attention from the Russia probe. In April, Nunes was forced to recuse himself from the committee’s probe of Russia because of allegations he may have inappropriately disclosed classified information. Nunes has denied any wrongdoing.

Current and former U.S. intelligence officials say requests for unmaskings are a routine and necessary part of their national security work. After requests are made, spy agencies decide whether to provide the names. Officials say few requests are rejected because most are legitimate.

Still, senior officials know that unmaskings can be controversial and are often reluctant to submit large numbers of requests. To protect themselves from any allegations of abuse, spy agencies track unmasking requests closely.

Rice and Brennan declined to comment. During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” in April, Rice denied that she sought to improperly unveil the names of Trump campaign or transition officials for political purposes. In recent congressional testimony, Brennan also has denied that he made any improper unmaskings.

Power did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nunes first called for his committee to investigate alleged Obama administration-era surveillance of Trump and his associates after the president, in a March 4 tweet, accused Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower. Officials said at the time that Trump’s wiretap allegations were false.

On March 15, Nunes and the committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam B. Schiff of California, sent a joint letter to the CIA, the NSA and the FBI asking them to provide the names of any intelligence and law enforcement agencies, as well as senior executive branch officials, who requested or authorized the unmasking of any U.S. persons or organizations between June 2016 and January 2017 related to “presidential candidates Donald J. Trump and Hillary Rodham Clinton and their associates in 2016.”

While the House Intelligence Committee asked only for the names of administration officials who requested unmaskings related to Trump and Clinton, intelligence agencies responded to the request by providing a tally that included requests by lawmakers.

The tally showed several requests from the House Intelligence Committee — requests that one official said were no different than those made by Obama administration officials. “This notion that there are these politically motivated unmaskings is just nonsense,” said the official.

In contrast to the committee’s handful of unmasking requests, officials said the tally showed that Rice requested a single unmasking related to Trump’s activities between June and January.

The Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee made no requests for unmaskings related to either Trump or Clinton during that time frame, according to the tally.

At a House Intelligence Committee briefing in May, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) pressed Brennan on whether he had ever requested the unmasking of a U.S. person’s identity. Brennan responded that he had.

Gowdy then pressed Brennan on whether he was aware of any requests made by any “U.S. ambassadors,” a possible reference to Power.

Brennan said he was not aware of any unmasking requests by ambassadors.

According to the ODNI, last year the NSA unmasked at least 1,934 identities of U.S. persons at the request of government officials. That figure relates to a certain court-authorized program of foreign intelligence gathering inside the United States.
