Let me point out two things here. One is the record prices for gasoline happened under Bush when oil hit more than $140 per barrel and gasoline was about $4 per gallon. Then when oil plunged to about $40 per barrel gasoline never went under $2 per gallon. Then oil production increased dramatically under Obama which kept oil between $40 and $50 per barrel.

But what was truly significant about that is up until then OPEC had a strangle hold on the price of oil and even just Saudi Arabia could make it rise or fall. But that was not true anymore when oil hit record prices and is not true now. The price of oil is actually controlled by speculators and there is not much OPEC or Saudi Arabia can do about it.

Then let's talk shortages. There never was an oil shortage or energy crisis in the 1970's. That was the biggest and most successful con artist scam ever run on the American public. Congress had slapped some windfall taxes on the oil companies so they just stopped refining it and created a fake gasoline shortage. And it worked. The first time Americans had trouble getting gasoline they panicked and demanded the government give the oil companies everything they wanted.

The lasting affect, however, was the idea of "shortages" was branded into the collective American mind and anytime even the mention of a shortage came up Americans started panic buying and hording. It got so bad that when a story appeared about a shortage of toilet paper in Europe appeared Americans started rushing to the stores to stock up and horde toilet paper. Which was stupid because the actual shortage was the kind of scratchy toilet paper used in public bathrooms in Europe. It didn't have a damned thing to do with a shortage of toilet paper in the US. But that didn't matter. So many Americans rushed out to buy and horde toilet paper we actually created a real shortage just with the panic buying.

We really ought to get smarter than that. But we haven't. It is happening right now with gasoline all over the US.

It was $1.90 here a month ago..

Most of the big chain stations here buy their fuel 6 months in advance...pretty much a bidding war.

Waco huh, now your posts make so much more sense ...

That's what they should do in Canada is bring back Imperial measures and us the baby gallon that the US has (3.8l). Five dollars a "Canadian gallon (4.55l)" here which translates to 4.15(ish) US gallon and just in time for the Labor Day long weekend.

Ace's, stay on topic if you are going to role in after a long absence and quit messaging woman that don't ask for correspondence with you, that is downright creepy dude and I don't appreciate having a woman come up to me asking if she is now being stalked ...

Because I am a skeptical sort of person, I looked for information on a toilet paper shortage in Europe. I didn't find one. I found lots of information about toilet paper shortages in Venezuela.

I also found several articles about a perceived toilet paper shortage here in the US in 1973. It was suggested that a US congressman in Wisconsin, in an effort to drum up demand for wood pulp used in making paper to benefit his corporate constituents, issued a press release in December of 1973 stating that a federal government agency had failed to secure sufficient bids to meet its need for toilet paper for the military. He implied that a toilet paper shortage was looming. Then Johnny Carson read a newspaper account of that press release and thought it would make a pretty funny joke. He told the entire nation that he had read about a toilet paper shortage, and the hysteria was ON.

Americans horded so much toilet paper that stores could not keep any stocked for more than a day. This went on for several months, stopping in the spring of 1974.

I am not making this up. No one can make this shit up!
    P.S. Pun intended! ;)

Maybe Harvey has done us all a favour - showing us the increased costs of supporting a gasoline-based economy and the difficulty of preserving a planet we can call home.

An economy based on gasoline? You do realize that gasoline is not the only product made from oil....

So before you run out and buy a Toyota prius, thinking you are saving the planet, you might want to stop using some of the other products made from petroleum as well....

Americans consume petroleum products at a rate of three-and-a-half gallons of oil and more than
250 cubic feet of natural gas per day each! But, as shown here petroleum is not just used for fuel.

And you just accidentally proved one of the biggest reasons there is to not burn gasoline and diesel fuel. In a discussion of fossil fuels I watched once a chemical engineer/professor made this incredibly important point right now there are so many products made out of oil and more discovered all the time he pointed out it is an incredibly valuable recourse and there is a limited supply of it. Once its gone there is no way to replace it.

And he said; "Aside from what we are already doing to our planet with global warming/climate change I fear future human generations will look back at us now and say; Let us get this straight. You had this incredibly versatile resource that we could have made millions of things out of and you fucking burned it"?

So thanks for highlighting that point. I could not have done it better myself.

i took a neighbors car to a local gas station to get her tank filled and paid $2.379 per gallon
maybe it has to do with the fact that most fuels are made on the coast
remember folks texas got tired of paying the same as areas that refused to build refineries

Are you suggesting that the current generation do without so future generations will have these product to use as they wish?

More than likely mankind will be gone long before the earths natural resources run out.

The people of this planet need the energy and products that oil provides. It seems there are people out there like Al Gore who preach the same line as you Stumbler and then turn around and do the complete opposite.

For example just one of Al Gore's houses in Tennessee uses 21 times the amount of electricity the average US home uses. This is just one of Gore's houses, he has 3 more.

Not to mention his private jet he goes flying around in increasing his carbon footprint. If the man really believed what he was saying he would be trying to set a better example.

Perhaps what you are saying would be more credible if it weren't coming from the do as I say, not as I do crowd.....

    1. ridgerunner
most of what can be made from oil can also be made from bean and nut oils or rice
and for the record al gore is a bullshit artist that preaches one thing but does another same as do all politicians including your great white messiah president cheeto

diesel is demand----as the economy has gotten better look at all the 18 wheelers running the roads

One barrel of oil (42 gal) makes 20 gallons of gasoline and 12 gallons of diesel = supply towards demand...

      RandyKnight, Sep 8, 2017
    3. RandyKnight
      • Demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils have been relatively high, especially in Europe, China, India, and the United States.
      • The transition to less polluting, lower-sulfur diesel fuels in the United States affected diesel fuel production and distribution costs.
      • The federal tax for on-highway diesel fuel of 24.4 cents/gallon is 6 cents per gallon higher than the federal tax on gasoline.

      RandyKnight, Sep 8, 2017
    4. ridgerunner
for the record fuel costs used to protect diesel just because it was a commercial fuel and now we pay the same ratio of tax yet that protection is gone
remember the more diesel costs the more your food and clothes and cars cost

yep it is passed to to the final consumer....but diesel has been higher for many years now....

Diesel went up to $4.75 at one time. I was working, so it was before June of 2011. I drove to work in the far left lane doing 55 mph.
      I got 36.5 MPG in a 1998 e-300 Mercedes. That sucked.

The rise in fuel prices was foreseeable when Harvey was still out in the Gulf. With Irma bearing down on Florida I foresee a dramatic rise in the price of orange juice. I won't let the price of fuel spoil my planned long distance road trip or the price of OJ upset me in the morning.
Just happy to be high, dry and safe.

Nobody finds it interesting that after years of inexpensive fuel here in the U.S. that fuel prices spike every year at the relative same times, all bullshit? Perhaps! During burricane season whenever a storm hits the mainland via Texas (where a majority of drilling rigs are) and during holidays and or cold snaps.

Another thing thats currently happening across the nation is used auto prices are going to jump . Texas needs to replace roughly 1 million vehicles due to flood loss and what ever happens in Florida could cause another spike. Zo...if your i the market BUY NOW!

Diesel is refined from the c-12 thru c-16 carbon molecules from hydrocarbons. Heating oil also comes from these molecules.
Diesel costs always increase in Winter. It's a supply and demand equation.
