Let's not forget for a second either how many went over there BEFORE Pearl Harbor was bombed, when it wasn't even our fight. D-Day was as much a turning point in the war as Stalingrad, and don't you ever forget that because many Americans rushed into certain death so we could storm beaches and take the German strongholds there. You don't get to sit back and say "Well the Russians would've done this anyway" because you don't know that. Then you might want to actually learn some history because the Americans won that war and I'm pretty sure Canadians weren't even involved in it. Also might like to look up the Battle of New Orleans where we royally whooped the British.

Oh, my fault. You mean the forces of the BRITISH EMPIRE, as Canada didn't exist back then. Either way, still lost.

Also, the Battle of King's Mountain, in which my ancestors fought, was a decisive win for the patriots against the loyalists. The Over the Mountain Victory Trail to King's Mountain came through the county in which I live. There is a lot of Revolutionary War history here. In fact, the county and town I live in, were named after RW heroes...just a little bit of history for Independence Day.

The Battle of New Orleans was fought after the peace treaty was signed. It was the only battle the United States won. With little opposition the British burned down Washington, DC. If the British were not still fighting Napoleon they could have won easily.

 

I think what annoys most Europeans with regards to WWII, is how many Americans view the war. Partially to blame are a collection of Hollywood movies which have a somewhat distorted view of the events. Films like Saving Private Ryan, with no mention of the Canadian, British, Australian, Polish troops and so on. U-571 which completely rewrites history by having the American navy capture the first enigma machine in May 1941, a major turning point in the war, when it was the British, and many more fims of a similar nature.

It is this kind thing which has led many Americans to think the war was all but over and the Germans had won, till they came along and saved Europe.

Many American soldiers died in WWII and everybody in the world, not just Europe should be immensely greatful for their sacrafices. In their doing so they saved many thousands of lives.

What they didn't do however was win the war, the biggest influence the Americans had on the outcome of WWII, was their efforts to supply the British during the early stages, if it were not for that, the world may well be a very different place. By the time America finally declared war, the balance of power had already shifted. Germany was bogged down by the Russians, and the British and the rest of the allies (including countries like India) were destroying the Germans in North Africa. The Brits also controlled the seas, and bombing campaigns had ruined the German hopes of taking the war any further. There were many people from France and other occupied countries making life hugely difficult for the German forces.

There is a common misconception amongst many Americans that the whole of Europe would be speaking German as their first language now if it were not for them, which is entirely false. It was clear by 1940 that Germany would not be able to commit to a land invasion of the UK and maintain any kind of control across Europe. By 1942, it was a case of how long would the germans manage to hold on

The Military conflict ended with Cornwallis surrendering, that was 1781. Don't lose sight of that, yes it was a US French victory, yes it couldn't have happened without the French Fleet winning at Chesapeake Bay but it was an honest to God military victory.
