Second, as noted earlier, the unemployment rate had been hovering around 4% during the last part of the Obama administration. Now, that ain't bad, since most economists say that an unemployment rate of less than 5% is "full employment".

But under the Trump administration the rate dropped to around 3.5% within 90 days of Trumps inauguration, and that, as they say, is AWESOME! It basically meant that for the first time since WWII there were more jobs than applicants. Which means for the first time in a long damn time, it was a "sellers" market; employees could negotiate salary and benefits and so forth from a position of strength.

One HR recruiter Shooter had worked with for many years complained that if someone showed up with skills that "sort of" fit the job description and they could pass the background check and drug test, they could demand whatever the fuck they wanted. The HR people, you see, were under tremendous pressure to fill job openings created by the economic expansion, and if a warm body showed up, and could pass the drug and background check, they were not going to get back out of the door.
Whatever it took.

Of greater import, the duration of unemployment went from a whopping 32 weeks under the Obama administration (April 2010) to 6 weeks under Trump (December, 2019). The average duration, by the way, has been 13 weeks pretty much through recessions and growth cycles from the 1950's and right up until the Obama administration and Congress fucked with the benefit program starting in 2009.

The groups most benefitting from this improved job market were minorities and women and young people just entering the labor force. Groups that did not benefit at all when the Obama economy finally turned around. These are groups that feel the impact of recession first and worst, and recover slowest of all, if ever. A nasty trend most politicians would rather not have discussed. And Trump didn't target these groups; he didn't throw money at them. He removed economic barriers for business and let the market take it's course.

Also, wages increased for the first time in a decade, under Trump and consumer confidence as well as business confidence shot through the upper atmosphere. Trump may be the least popular president in modern times, but he surely does create consumer confidence, and business confidence. Again, not something despicables like to talk about.

Here is the big difference between the Supreme Court appointment that was available to Obama in the last few months of Obama's second term, and the seat that is now open on the Supreme Court in the last few months of Trump's FIRST term.

Obama's attempt to fill the seat was as a TRUE Lame Duck President. Trump's will not be that. It is a far-reaching idea that Trump will not be President going forward. He faces re-election, but he is far from a 'Lame Duck'
