    Concur. Central Europe hasn't been supportive of Moscow's agenda in the last few decades. Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia all joined NATO in 2004. Albania and Croatia joined in 2009. Montenegro hopped on in 2017, and North Macedonia joined in 2020. As a power bloc, NATO has continued expanding its membership to the east, decade by decade - and it now includes most of the former Warsaw Pact member states.

    Small wonder Putin favors territorial expansion and wants to force nations to pick sides; he's probably feeling rather closed-in.

    I've heard before that Russia is still angry about NATO's involvement in the Kosovo War (1999). A common argument is NATO didn't have the backing of the UN Security Council for its action - though it could not, as Russia is one of the five permanent Security Council members, and has veto power over Security Council resolutions. Russia sided with the Serbian leadership (Milošević, that old charmer) and no UN-based action would proceed. Russia claiming "NATO didn't have UN backing", when Russia is primarily the reason there was no UN backing, is both accurate and self-serving; in context it's a rhetorical point, with limited practical value.

    I will also offer that NATO's bombings in '99 weren't because Yugoslavia "wouldn't join up", as Yugoslavia did not properly exist by that point, except in some political rhetoric of the day. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had dissolved into its component states by January, 1992. (Those component states being Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Serbia, and Macedonia - now North Macedonia).

    Post-war, several of those nations did become NATO members (Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia) - though in the case of the latter two, significant time had passed since the '99 war.
