Supposedly, the logic behind the M-16 was that it was lighter than the older rifles and smaller. Why not then, go with mini-14's ? I used M-16's, sometimes, while in service and I hated them. Even the M-1 Carbine is superior to the M-16.

The M-16 was supposed to be set for a NATO standard round. (5.66 mm, I think...probably wrong on that count though.) It also was designed not to jam. Of course, the people who designed it got told to make it in a cheaper style instead, rather than use the alloys it was designed with. Then there's the whole issue with the gun cleaning kit...
