Obama would like nothing more than to see BP go bankrupt. From his point of view, it doesn't matter how many pensioners/investors and employees may be adversely affected. Nor does it matter what country they come from. This is all based on an emotinal hatred of "big oil".

There exists a philisophical belief that oil companies are evil and must be destroyed regardless of the consequences. The pleasure obtained by doing this far outstrips the detrimental effects of doing so.

The only thing that will save BP is the short attention span of this administration. Not too long ago bankers were the number one enemy of humanity and AIG was the poster child of the devil. After the BP spill happened, the administration dropped the criminal probe of the rascally bankers at AIG.

BP's only hope of survival is that the next disaster comes along soon, but this oil leak isn't going to be fixed anytime soon, so even that may not be enough to save them.

Nope...you're wrong.....it's not all based on an emotional hatred of 'big oil'.

Try looking at the idea that it's the thought of multi-national corporate muscle trying to ride roughshod over government regulation.......without which, 'big business' would operate with no thought at all other than maximising profit......taking whatever shortcuts it could get away with, irrespective of human and environmental cost.

Obama is a very brave man indeed to take on such muscle in a fight.

I wouldn't be surprised if his security has been put on heightened alert.

I wish President Obama was a left wing demagogue. This oil spell is a left wing issue. The America people are in a bad mood because of the economy. Obama needs to channel this into hatred against the business community and the rich the way Roosevelt did.

Emotinal?! (sic) The only emotinal response is fear.

Remember "Too Big To Fail?" Try "Too Big To Control."

Remember those sand booms along the Louisiana marshes? If they'd been built weeks ago, the wetlands would be safe? Louisiana and the parishes were waiting for Army Corp approval?

You know why they were waiting for Army Corps approval? Because that approval was necessary for federal funding. An entire state was so afraid of British Petroleum not paying them back - despite British Petroleum's assurances to the contrary - that they let their wetlands die instead of taking on the financial risk of building the booms themselves.

Even the United States federal government has officials that doubt the federal government's ability to reign in British Petroleum.

If fear can be rational, this is an emotional response every American should assume.

Folks, it's real simple. This is a zero sum game. Either BP, its stockholders and its employees pay for what they've done, or U.S. taxpayers have to pay. For me, the choice is obvious. It baffles me that anyone would want to defend BP's right to despoil the environment and duck responsibility for it.

David Prosser: BP boss's impossible dilemma: keep the investors happy or the US government.

Tony Hayward has less than seven weeks to decide who he is most worried about upsetting. On 27 July, BP must tell the stock market what it intends to pay as its second quarterly dividend of the year. Stick with the schedule that saw the oil giant hand out around £7bn worth of dividends last year and the political ramifications in the US don't bear thinking about. But then nor does the reaction of investors in BP, who have already cut its value in half since this crisis began, to a postponement or cancellation of the generous income they have got so used to receiving.

Mr Hayward can expect a pretty unpleasant encounter with the Congressional committee in front of which he is due to appear next week. He has no choice but to remain in the US for that hearing, but is now expected to return to the UK once that grilling is out of the way.

That reflects two calculations on BP's part. First, while Mr Hayward may face accusations that he is cutting and running, the chief executive's reputation in the US is now so damaged that more bad headlines are neither here nor there. It makes sense to hand over the US campaign to Carl-Henric Svanberg, BP's chairman, who has in any case faced criticism for his lack of visibility until now. Second, Mr Hayward may, from a London base, have a better chance of garnering political support for BP from the British Government. That's an important challenge: judging from the Prime Minister's comments yesterday, the Government has for now decided it is more interested in getting off to a good start with President Obama than defending one of its biggest companies.

BP has its political supporters in Britain. But the combined efforts of Boris Johnson and Lord Tebbit, both of whom came out fighting on its behalf yesterday, are unlikely to offer much in the way of protection from the White House. A more robust defence from David Cameron, on the other hand, might calm the President – at least in private, even if the intemperate rhetoric continues.

If Mr Hayward can secure his support, the Prime Minister might like to remind President Obama that it is not only British savers who will suffer if BP suspends dividend payments, or its value falls further. American institutions such as the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Texas Teachers Retirement System hold 25 per cent of the oil company's shares.

Individual investors – ordinary Joes all over the country – own a further 14 per cent of BP. It is not just the immediate economic victims of the oil spill who are suffering in the US, but all of those who are exposed to BP's financial fortunes.

I have one and a half words for them: Fuck 'em. :)

Stockholders are supposed to lose when companies screw up this badly. And these particular stockholders have been reaping rewards for decades.

It maybe should be understood also that BP's money only kind of exists 'on paper'.....or on an electronic screen somewhere.

I mean....who has the kind of cash that BP is reputedly worth just laying around.....with easy access available.

Well fuck you very much Big Bird. I don't think you can blame our President for company employees who were careless, complacent, lazy and cheap. And made a series of decisions that neglected the basic fundamentals of their job which is: FIRE BAD.

Now I'm not saying that's your fault or even that the men who made those really stupid and deadly decisions are from the UK. In all probability they are US citizens. But at the same time you can't blame us for being really upset with the people that caused 11 deaths and the worst environmental disaster in our history. And those people did in fact work for BP and had the ultimate responsibility.

There is no excuse for BOPs not to work or for not knowing you're taking a gas kick. And there hasn't been for the past 100 years and if you don't believe me ask MusicMachine.

Besides, get another spokesman besides Tony Hayward because we're way ahead of you in the pissed off department already and Hayward keeps making BP look worse and worse.

In the meantime how many mass murders are you guys going to put up with before you get come gun control laws over there?

Oh please don't. Non-fuck them they don't deserve to get fucked.

The front page of our state paper out here has two stories concerning BP and the Gulf Blow Out. Both of them say the blow out will not have any effect on BP's drilling and production programs out here in the Rocky Mountains.

I think that's significant. It tells just how serious this really is to BP. An expensive public relations nightmare for sure. But nothing they can't make up in six months.

Besides, these wells are really kick ass as far as the amount of oil and natural gas and even as expensive as this spill is the well will pay for itself eventually and in the meantime they'll drill several more right around it which will pay for themselves in six months to a year and produce for 20 years.

I am just now reading this thread, and I have a few impressions:

First, that British or American, no one wants to take responsibility for this major-league fuck-up.

Two, some people believe that President Obama should sit back and do nothing in a major crisis (like previous presidents with the initials GWB) or simply smile inanely at Tony Blair (oh, wait----he's not PM any more----but he's still perfect to smile inanely to....)

Third, Obama should not be calling 'BP' BP, because that implies 'British Petroleum', so he should make up some other name (which would confuse everyone) to use when referring to the corporation that is to blame for this disaster.

This is all a joke. The President of the United States is expected to take the blame if he does NOT act and also take the blame if he DOES act. The roaches are always waiting to scramble as soon as the light goes on...

My feeling is that he should polish up his Teddy Roosevelt chops, fire up the Justice Department and break BP into smithereens. It won't stop the leak, it won't clean up the Gulf, but he'll look presidential as hell.

Any Brit who is pissed off about BP's poor treatment by our President is an idiot.
It's not as if he's insulting the British people, or even the Government.
BP has been getting away with a lot of shit for a long time, and this time it's just way to big to over look.
To give you some idea of the level of negligence we're talking about here, in the last three years BP managed to rack up 760 "willful, and egregious" safety violations.
Now to put that into some kind of perspective in the same period Exxon had 1, Citco 2, Sunaco, and ConicoPhillips each had 8.
Of course the Federal government has it's share of the blame for lax enforcement, but BP should have realized that this kind of safety record could potently lead to disaster.

My mother lives on the gulf coast, so this is kind of personal to me, and the idea that some British people are getting their panties in a twist over what our President has said about it makes me want to punch somebody.
