Obama took on the mess of an economy that Bush and the democratic congress left for him because of the housing/financing crisis. His bailout of banks and industry fixed that immediate issue, the economy began its slow rise, but he could not create jobs and the country was still struggling. Those who succeed in politics are those who are skilled at driving wedges. Richard Nixon successfully drove a wedge between white blue collar workers and the Democrat Party, and enabled the Republican Party to dominate the United States.

The Democrat Party will resume dominance when Democratic leaders drive another wedge between white blue collar Republicans and the well to do Republicans who benefit from Republican economic policies. If the Republican Party tries to reduce spending on middle class entitlements in order to fund tax cuts for the rich, the Republican Party will assist the Democrats in driving the wedge.

During the 2016, when asked if he favored raising taxes on the rich he answered, "I do. I do – including myself. I do."

Donald Trump is the worst of the 13 presidents who have served since the end of World War II, 41 percent of American voters say, followed by 21 percent who list Barack Obama and 10 percent who cite Richard Nixon, in a Quinnipiac University National Poll.

 

At the same time Trump is trying to start a war with Iran he is going to cause inflation by imposing large tariffs on Chinese goods. As Chinese made goods increase in price, American manufacturers will increase the price of their goods too. Over half of what one sees in a department store is made in China. All of that is about to become more expensive, probably much more expensive.

 

How about the worst president of all! My vote is for Woodrow Wilson who said he wanted to make the world safe for democracy. Then proceeded to stamp out civil liberties to the point where democracy barely existed in this country. Democrats have never chided him for that. Lincoln and W basically abolished the writ of habeus corpus during their administrations . This is a principle of common law that stretches back to the magna carta! Republicans never address this. That’s why I am an independent.

What followed were five years of black ghetto rioting and more enduring increases in black rates of crime, illegitimacy, and welfare dependence. There was even a welfare rights movement that encouraged blacks in low wage jobs to quit their jobs and go on welfare.

I wrote "followed" rather than "happened because of" because we can never know what would have happened if the civil rights legislation had not been signed, and if the War on Poverty had not increased spending on anti poverty programs designed to help poor blacks. Nevertheless, most whites did detect casual relationships. So do I.

The black ghetto riots ended abruptly with the inauguration of President Nixon. Whites rewarded Nixon with a landslide victory in 1972, even though the War in Vietnam had become unpopular, and even though The Washington Post had begun to report on the Watergate break in.

I believe that if the civil rights legislation and the War on Poverty had not been followed by the black ghetto riots and a general crime wave Nixon would have been defeated in 1968 by a Democrat dove who would have negotiated an end to the War in Vietnam. Even Hubert Humphrey would have ended the War before 1975.

Nixon was also helped by the fact that the anti war riots at the Democrat National Convention in 1968 made the anti war movement, rather than the War in Vietnam, the issue that most alarmed most whites. In 1969 public opinion surveys indicated that most Americans thought "student disturbances" were a major threat endangering the United States.

After 1968 the United States would have had to negotiate a conditional surrender to North Vietnam. That would have been less humiliating than the way the War in Vietnam did end. Also, one of the conditions would have been the evacuation of the Vietnamese who later on became boat people, and their settlement in the United States. American abandonment of the boat people to the Thai pirates was the shameful end of a shameful war.

I have known Vietnamese war refugees. They are good people.

 

Nixon would have been impeached in the House and removed in the senate. That’s why he resigned. Had the House and Senate been in Republican hands that likely would not have happened. I don’t see all this republican power of which you speak.

 

What you say about Nixon surviving with Republican control of both houses of Congress is true. He would have also benefited from a good economy. The inflationary recession of 1974 put Americans into a bad mood and made Nixon vulnerable to the Watergate Scandal.

What you say does not refute my argument that the black ghetto riots, the crime wave during the 1960's and the disruptive behavior of anti war demonstrators enabled Nixon to win a landslide victory in 1972, and led to the Republican domination of the United States that persists.

Why did the black ghetto riots end abruptly with the inauguration of Nixon? Why for that matter did the black ghetto riots that happened when Obama was president end abruptly with the inauguration of Donald Trump? I believe they ended because potential black ghetto rioters knew and still know that Nixon and Trump would respond to black ghetto riots by ordering that the rioters be shot on sight. I am confident that most whites feel the same way.

Blacks do not riot when they lack hope. They riot when they think they can get away with it.
